IHOBE – BECOLD’S ECODESIGN AND DEMONSTRATION IN CIRCULAR ECONOMICS project
The aim of BECOLD is to totally or partially eliminate the use of cutting oils and fluids. But not only does it bring benefits in economic terms, if we talk in terms of the environment, this new product can greatly reduce pollution, is not harmful to the environment and helps reduce the contribution to climate change as it has a carbon footprint that is much lower than other processes. Another advantage is that it is not harmful to the health of workers (as can be the case with coolant and other cutting oils that can be harmful to the skin and respiratory system). We can therefore say that it is a circular product and it is based on three main strategies.
Recirculate strategy:.
Contributes to closing the circle (recirculate) as it uses waste from other industries as raw material. This is the case of the cryogenic CO2 it uses, which comes from CO2 generated as waste by other industrial processes. In this way, it allows a new use to be given to what until now was considered waste. Waste that in this case contributes to global warming. On the other hand, unlike other technologies, BECOLD generates chips that come out practically dry and without mineral residues, which facilitates their use as raw material, reusing the material and closing the circle. Therefore, the use of BECOLD favours recirculation compared to other technologies that generate waste that either cannot be used or require costly management processes. BECOLD does not generate any waste or components that need to be recycled or disposed of; all leftovers from its use are used directly as raw material, favouring reuse.
Narrowing the circle strategy:.
This is a technology with circular supplies that allow the circle to be narrowed, as it allows materials of mineral origin to be replaced by materials of vegetable origin. Furthermore, the swarf generated is more easily recirculated, and as it is dry it does not require any treatment, which implies a lower demand for materials and energy for such treatment. In addition, BECOLD significantly reduces machining times, saving time and energy, thus optimising the machining process and minimising the use of energy, which is key to the strategy of narrowing the circle.
Slowing down strategy:.
This technology allows tool life to be increased by providing better performance and savings in material and energy (which contributes to the narrowing strategy above).
In short, it is a technology that combines minimum quantity oil lubrication (MQL) with the cooling provided by liquid CO2. By combining these two systems, excellent performance is achieved in the machining process. In fact, one of the lines of work to be developed is with automotive engine manufacturers, who generate a large amount of CO2 during engine testing, CO2 that can of course be reused in and with the BECOLD equipment.
